Since we’ve looked back at our favourite games of 2017, we can also take a moment to look ahead to the announced releases for 2018 and see which titles are tickling our writers’ fancy! (Better late than never hey folks!)
Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition – Capcom – Kuniku – 16 January 2018
Street Fighter V is just an ongoing game for me. It is a game that I play competitively and therefore play a lot. The 16th of January sees it being re-released as it “should have been” at launch. It brings Season 3 of the game’s DLC, a fresh set of balance changes, and new game mechanics. Existing players don’t need to buy anything, as all of the updates are free, but for anyone who was scared away by initial reviews of Street Fighter V could, and should, be tempted to pick up Arcade Edition when it releases.
Dragon Ball FighterZ – Arc System Works/Bandai Namco – Kuniku – 26 January 2018
Many fighting game players are also big fans of anime, and subsequently Dragon Ball Z. Taking that IP, combining it with Arc System Works’ development team, and Bandai Namco’s publishing power, and you’ve got one of the most hype new Fighting Games of 2018.
Detroit: Become Human – Quantic Dream – Lefranzine – Q1 2018
I was excited when it was announced, I played the demo twice at EGX 2017 and I am still looking forward to Detroit landing. It can’t get here fast enough as for fans of Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Until Dawn, I have no doubt that this will be a must have in 2018.
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom – Level-5 – Kuniku – 23 March 2018
This has been pushed back from its previously announced January release date, but is still fairly early on in the year. The first Ni No Kuni game, took the brilliant storytelling of your classic JRPGs, and combined it with animation from Studio Ghibli. While Revenant Kingdom doesn’t include the Studio Ghibli animation sequences, the art style remains the same. I loved the White Witch, and can’t wait for Revenant Kingdom to release.
New Tomb Raider – Crystal Dynamics – Lefranzine – TBA 2018
The awesome announcement that there will be a new Tomb Raider which we still expect to be ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ was enough to make me squeal. The added bonus that release will be soon after the official announcement makes it even better. I’m ready and preparing my bank account for the inevitable Collectors’ Edition that will bankrupt me as the new games have been great so far!
Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition – Capcom – Kuniku – TBA May 2018
In case you’d not noticed I’m a huge Street Fighter fan, so naturally I’m excited about the 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, featuring nearly all of the iterations of Street Fighter between 2, and now, on a single disk. Enough Said.
Days Gone – Bend Studio – Lefranzine – TBA 2018?
I am ready for Days Gone now. We have waited long enough and been teased enough with those amazing and daunting trailers so I’m still hopeful that it will land in 2018. It reminds me of The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later and The Last of Us all rolled in to one and if it is as good as the gameplay trailer suggests, then this could be a brilliant and gripping survival horror experience.
Call of C’thulhu – Cyanide – Kuniku – TBA 2018
This is an odd one for me, usually horror games are Lefranzine’s cup of tea, I’ll admit, I just don’t like horror games (or films for that matter), I just don’t see the point in “jump scares”. But anything from the H.P. Lovecraft Mythos will pique my interest. I’m very interested to see how Cyanide handle the whole insanity aspect of the lore.
Spider-Man – Insomniac Games – Kuniku – TBA 2018
Movie base games often suck, much like how game based movies often suck (although are getting better with modern CGI tbh). But I can’t help but love how the trailers for the new PS4 exclusive Spider-Man game are showing off the action of the game. If done well this game could be one of my favourites of the year, if done badly however…
Telltale’s The Walking Dead Final Series and The Wolf Among Us 2 – Telltale – Lefranzine – TBA 2018
I love Telltale games and while I am ready for the final series of the Walking Dead, I really hope it is the hard hitting, emotional finale we will want. As for The Wolf Among Us, the first series was great and I loved the story telling so I’m interested to see where this adventure takes us.
Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove – HumaNature Studios – Kuniku – TBA 2018
I backed this on Kickstarter, so naturally I’m excited to see what becomes of it. I absolutely adored Toejam and Earl on my SEGA Megadrive as a kid, and I’m super excited for a modern rendition of it to launch sometime in 2018.
Sea of Thieves – Rare – Lefranzine – March 2018
I thoroughly enjoyed Sea of Thieves at EGX 2017 and really want to sail the high seas with my friends using Cross Play (as I don’t have an XBOX One) so I’ll be looking to get this title as soon as I can really for the Pirating adventure that requires a little extra team work!
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth – Blizzard – Kuniku – TBA 2018
If you’ve not noticed over the years of writing for Darkworld Gaming, I’m a huge Blizzard Fan Boy. While I enjoyed Blizzard games all the way from Lost Vikings, through the Warcraft RTS games, it was World of Warcraft that made Blizzard one of, if not my actual, favourite developers out there. And While I’ve had to let my WoW subscription go, due to grown up financial stuff, we all know I’ll be back and returning to my fully addicted ways once the new Expansion drops.
Burden of Command – Green Tree Games LLC – Geoff – TBA 2018
I simply cannot wait for this. It’s going to be a masterpiece. Burden of Command places you in charge of troops in World War 2. What will set it apart from all other games of its kind (including the simply superb Sudden Strike Series and Company of Heroes games) is the focus on psychology. It will be up to you to make decisions in the heat of combat which will have knock on effects across your entire campaign with your squad. What if the captain goes down – do you continue on with the mission, getting a reputation for leaving men behind – or do you abort the mission to rescue him, having him die anyway, and lose valuable ground to the Nazi forces. For someone as passionate about World War 2 gaming as I am, plus the focus on the personality and morale of your troops which will make XCOM’s squad management look like Barbie’s First Dress Up, I simply cannot wait for this.
State of Decay 2 – Undead Labs – Teeny – Q1 2018
State of Decay 2 promises to deliver everything the first game couldn’t quite reach. Our obsession with zombie survival has not (and cannot) die. I’ll be there, day 1, with my gang of survivors, trying to survive. The advanced base building mechanics look so damn sweet, you just know I’m going to fight to the last to protect my sweet pad.
Last Year – Elastic Games – Teeny – TBA
There is no confirmation yet whether Last Year will be available in 2018, however, they have already held a beta in 2017 so it seems likely we may see at least some kind of early access open to the public. For fans of the currently popular genre of arena survival horror games like Dead by Daylight, Deceit, and Friday the 13th, Last Year brings a new take to the mechanics of an asymmetrical multiplayer game. The killer can phase in and out of reality in order to set up the perfect trap for their victims. This time, survivors can fight back against the predator hunting them, so no one is safe.
Necrobarista – Route 59 – Teeny – TBA 2018
For all of you wondering how folks hear about those weird but impactful story games that appear to come out of nowhere and shake the gaming community? Games like Oxenfree, Night in the Woods, and Kentucky Route Zero? Listen up. The name ‘Necrobarista’ has been whispering through the internet for a few months now. It’s a visual novel created in unity3D, and from the trailer, it looks like the artwork and soundtrack are going to astound. I don’t know much about the story yet, but that’s the joy of this kind of game, I want to find out.
There are so many great titles due out among the big names such as God of War 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Far Cry 5, Metro Exodus, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Anthem (maybe even Last of Us Part 2?) due to drop in 2018 and provide us with some amazing experiences, we can’t name them all! What are you looking forward to most in 2018?
