E3 2017: Microsoft Conference Round Up

Better late than never! We knew Microsoft would be working hard to bring a big show this year with the release of Project Scorpio and E3 was the opportunity to shine. So here’s what was on offer from the show case.

Xbox One X

That’s right, the new member of the Xbox One family is the X, previously known as Project Scorpio. Now, I battled with fanboys in the early days of the Scorpio announcement who were so sure that this would be a next gen console and I’m glad to say that they were wrong. This is a new addition to the range rather than a new generation as it offers 4K and upgraded specs providing enhanced graphics and more power than its predecessors. Releasing in November at a £500 price tag, the Xbox One X will appeal to those of you who don’t own a gaming PC. Here’s the trailer from the conference.

Forza Motorsport 7

The Forza series has always been a popular game for Microsoft fans and the new addition looks to add more tracks and environments to race on. It looks pretty impressive in 4K as you can see from the below trailer and the updated weather effects look particularly challenging. The game will be released on Xbox One in October.

Metro Exodus

Now, I haven’t played the Metro games but they are on my list believe me. The trailer for Metro Exodus really grabbed my interest and it certainly looks amazing in 4K! If you enjoy survival horror with that combination of intense combat and stealth then you’ll need to add this to your list for games to get in 2018 on Xbox, PC and PS4.

Assassins Creed Origins

If you know me well, you’ll know I’m a bit of an Assassins Creed fan. You’ll also know that I don’t own an Xbox… so imagine my slight panic when Microsoft had the full Origins reveal in their showcase where I questioned if it was an exclusive before realising that would be silly of Ubisoft. Instead, it was an opportunity to show off the Xbox One X and again, the 4K resolution the console offers. As a fan of the series, I was hoping that there would be some changes to keep me interested and these were certainly delivered with an extensive open world map, RPG style display and amazing looking combat, Bayek may have impressed me enough before I’ve managed to get my hands on him.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

If you own a PC, you probably have PUBG on Steam Early Access. I know a lot of people who play this game and have watched them stream and play together while embarrassing myself when one of them said they had a ‘Chicken Dinner’ last night by saying ‘I like a good chicken dinner’… they meant they had a winner winner chicken dinner. This is a very popular battle royale shooter in which you take on an enemy team. This received quite a cheer as it will be launching on Xbox One this year and moving out of Early Access for a full PC version release.

State of Decay 2

It’s not here yet but State of Decay 2 has a new trailer and is slated for release in early 2018. For a few moments I thought it might be a new Left 4 Dead before realising that it was State of Decay. It looks gritty and fun while also having that co-op aspect which will appeal to players who are impartial to the survival zombie horror genre.

The Darwin Project

I had no idea what was going on during this reveal, but it did look like some fast paced battle royal style fun with characters that have abilities and will duke it out in some interesting environments with their weapons and powers.

Minecraft: Better Together

Do you like Minecraft? Well if you do, you will be able to connect with Xbox, Nintento Switch, mobile and Windows PC player communities… no PS4 though. The game will also be getting a 4K upgrade of course… but essentially… Minecraft.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

If you like fighting games and Dragon Ball Z then you’ll be all over this new game coming to Xbox One, PC and PS4 in 2018. It looks crazy, fun and most of all like Dragon Ball Z. Bandai Namco know how to keep fighting game fans happy!

Black Desert

Black Desert is an MMORPG which will be releasing in early 2018 on the Xbox store. With interesting beasts and combat to master, this will appeal to gamers who love this play style. The graphics also look amazing by the way.

The Last Night

A new 2-D cyberpunk open world adventure with guns, neon lights and 4 unique districts to work through? Looks like an interesting concept to me! Check out the trailer to see what I mean.

The Artful Escape

Another fun and crazy looking title is The Artful Escape. A graphically stunning, musical extravaganza with lots of amazing environments, this game will be available on Xbox One and Windows 10. It does suggest this will be a launch title for the X but now official date has been confirmed.

Code Vein

Bandai Namco were back on the screens but this time with their dystopian RPG with vampires, ghouls and a whole lot of fighting with rather large swords. Code Vein will be on Xbox, PC and PS4 in 2018.

Sea of Thieves

A game that many of our friends are looking forward to is Sea of Thieves! Adventure with your friends on the high seas collecting treasure and working together to overcomes enemies and foes a like. It does look like a lot of fun and at E3, we were treated to some extended gameplay footage to keep is wanting more until it’s releasing in early 2018 on Xbox and Windows 1o.

From the creators of Gone Home comes Tacoma, a journey of exploration through an abandoned space station with interesting ‘people’ around the place.

Super Lucky’s Tale

If you’re a fan of platformers then Super Lucky’s Tale may be one to add to your list. You’ll help Lucky traverse new, dynamic landscapes to help him save the Book of Ages while meeting some interesting characters along the way.

Need I say more? Cuphead.

Crackdown 3

If Terry Crews tells you to do something… you’ll probably do it which is why he was the poster man for Crackdown 3. A welcome return for the Crackdown series will be available on PC and Xbox One from November 7th.

Give me a dark co-op RPG game any day and Ashen certainly looks interesting but in narrative and art style.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

I loved Life is Strange. It is a game that you will either love or hate depending on whether you can handle the teenage hipsters who say ‘hella’ a lot or take pretentious photos which are ‘arty’. While it was announced a short while ago, we got a first look at what to expect from the prequel which will have the first episode released on 31st August. As I could only find extended gameplay footage or a PS4 annoucement trailer… this is what you get as Xbox don’t seem to have posted a trailer on their YouTube

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

As soon as it started, I thought this was Ori… then Ori appeared and I could have cried. Possibly one of the only creatures (other than my bearded dragon) who could move me to tears just in a trailer. I love Ori and cannot wait for the new game which will be on Xbox and Windows 10. Just watch this trailer and see how beautiful it looks.

Backwards Compatibility

One of the biggest announcements was that original Xbox titles will be coming to backwards compatibility later this year which is big news for die hard fans who miss playing the old Xbox games. Also, Phil Spencer advised that a number of Xbox One games would be getting 4K updates that will be free for users. Pretty handy if you’re going to be upgrading your console and your TV.

While it was teasing at the EA press conference, Microsoft had the gameplay reveal for the new Bioware IP called Anthem. It looks like a mixture of Halo, Destiny and Titanfall with some interesting co-op and stunning environments. The exosuits do look interesting and the ability to fly and blow things up is highly appealing. Check out the gameplay below and revel in the sci-fi adventure that Bioware have cooked up for us.
