It’s August! With that comes new Games With Gold and 4 fantastic new games added to the lineup. So let’s take a look and see what Microsoft have in store for their players this month.
As usual there are 2 titles for both the Xbox One and the Xbox 360, however the latter titles can be played on the newer console thanks to backwards compatibility. As per usual we jump straight in with the games, trailers and direct links to download so all you need to do is keep us in your favorites and we will do the hard work for you.
Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate (XB1):
For fans of the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises this game is worth its weight in gold (I’ll get my coat…), with over 120 playable characters the hack and slash game is one of the best games of its genre. Originally released in August 2014 for the Xbox One the game still holds its value almost 2 years later, with most games in this franchise you assume its a case of immediately getting into the action and kicking some ass. However immediately you are thrown onto the battlefield against Hydra and end up on the losing side. With just yourself and 2 others, a powerful mystic saves you allowing you to go back in time and rebuild your army for the final battle. Definitely a fun game, if a little repetitive.
The game is available from August 1st – 31st and can be downloaded via the Xbox Store here. For those interested it will use approx 19.61Gb of Hard Drive space.
WWE 2K16 (XB1):
In what used to be billed as the ultimate wrestling game, it has suffered over the last couple of years with the step up in console hardware. That said there are over 120 wrestlers that you can chose to play as in the game, and at pre-order stage you also had the option of using Arnold Schwarzenegger. The usual sports game modes exist such as career mode which sees you start off as a low level wrestler and moving through the ranks to claim the ultimate title. For a free game it is definitely worth a look, even it is just remains in the library until you need to entertain some kids one day.
The Game is available from August 16th – September 15th and can be downloaded via the Xbox Store here. For those tight for space it will use a whopping 42.19Gb of HDD space.
Spleunky (Xbox 360 & XB1 via Backwards Compatibility):
Spleunky is one of those games that since inception has always found support in both the PC and Xbox markets. The 2D platformer has always scored highly among game critics and this month finds itself as the first Xbox 360 game to be given away. The premise of the game sees you exploring underground caves and tunnels in search of treasure, whilst avoiding traps and enemies. You as the spleunker can jump or whip enemies and can pick up items to attack enemies with or use to set off traps. With up to 9 different characters to play with there is certainly enough to keep you occupied in this retro feeling indie game.
The game is available for download from August 1st – August 15th. It can be downloaded via the Xbox Store here. As with most 360 games these are fairly small in comparison to the current generation so this will only fill 157.7Mb of space on your drive.
Beyond Good & Evil HD (Xbox 360 & XB1 via Backwards Compatibility):
Beyond Good & Evil has been around for a long time and started out on the PlayStation 2 in 2003. The years passed and in 2011 the HD remake hit the Xbox Store. Whilst it is acknowledged the game did not do well commercially, it was critically well received and was nominated for Game of The Year in 2004. Since then trailers have shown a follow up for this game for next generation so it won’t be long until the story can continue. In the meantime a brief explanation on the story below with the usual links and trailer.
Jade and Pey’j are care-taking the children of Hillys orphaned by the DomZ. When Jade runs out of money to run the shield that protects them, she finds a photography job, cataloging all the species on Hillys for a science museum. She is recruited by the IRIS Network, which suspects that the Alpha Sections are behind planet-wide disappearances. Jade’s first target of investigation is an Alpha Sections factory. She discovers evidence of human trafficking orchestrated by the DomZ under the Alpha Sections’ authority. Along the way she rescues Double H, who was kidnapped and tortured by the DomZ. Pey’j is abducted by the DomZ and taken to a slaughterhouse that is to be launched to a lunar base. After failing to extract Pey’j from the slaughterhouse in time, Jade learns that Pey’j was, in fact, the secret chief of the IRIS Network.
Jade learns that the Alpha Sections are being possessed and manipulated by the DomZ. Using Beluga, the ship Pey’j used to travel to Hillys, Jade and Double H go to the DomZ lunar base. There, Jade finds Pey’j dead, but a strange power inside her brings back his soul, reviving him. After rescuing Pey’j, transmitting her final report, and sparking a revolution, Jade confronts the DomZ High Priest. She learns that her human form is the latest container to hide a power stolen from the DomZ centuries ago in the hope that the High Priest, who must have spirit energy to survive, would starve to death. The High Priest managed to find a substitute energy in the souls of all those kidnapped from Hillys. Using the stolen power within her, Jade is able to destroy the DomZ High Priest, though nearly losing control of her soul in the process, and then revive and rescue those that have been abducted. In a post-credits scene back on Hillys, a DomZ spore grows on Pey’j’s hand.
The game is available for download from August 16th – August 31st, It can be downloaded via the Xbox Store here. The total download is 1.68Gb so slightly larger than Spleunky.
That wraps up another month of Games With Gold.
