So once again “Gaming Christmas” is upon us.
And, unfortunately, it won’t be long before E3 will be over for another year.
Here we’ll be briefly cover what Sony unleashed upon its fans at the Shrine Auditorium. They covered many of the more indie titles in their pre-show, before kicking off the press conference proper with AAA Title after AAA Title. Below is the full Sony PlayStation press conference:
However if you want a more condensed version of the near 2 hour show I’ll just link the individual trailers below, thus skipping out all of the talking inbetween.
ABZÛ is a stunningly beautiful underwater adventure game based around diving and exploration
Bound transports you into a beautiful, fantastical world that exists in the mind of a woman revisiting the memories of her childhood. You’ll use dance moves to tranverse vast environments filled with platforming challenges. As the game progresses, the introspective story unfolds through powerful metaphor and imagery, adding emotional depth to the protagonist’s journey.
War is a machine. Pilot hulking death machines and use massive weaponry to destroy your foes in this fast-paced FPS game ported from PC to PS4.
Find out what it takes to free your fellow exciles from a mystical purgatory in Pyre, from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
While perhaps not as “indie” as the other titles in the pre-show, Watchdogs had already been covered in more detail in the Ubisoft show case.
Main Press Conference
The main press conference started off with 6 back to back trailers.
God of War
The new PS4 God of War just looks amazing. Quite possibly one of my personal highlights of E3 so far. God of War has moved on from the Greek Gods and now takes the war to the Norse lands. Definitely check out this Gameplay Trailer.
Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game set in a harsh wilderness two years after a devastating global pandemic. Play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who rides the broken road, fighting to survive while searching for a reason to live.
At its core, Days Gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love – and hope. It’s about how even when confronted with such enormous tragedy they find a reason to live. Hope never dies. Check out the Announcement trailer for this new IP:
Sony also showed a gameplay demo trailer later on in the show:
The Last Guardian
The Last Guardian has been on the radar for a while, and E3 brought a new trailer and a release date.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
This was another one that quickly piqued my interests. Launching February 28, 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn is an exhilarating new open-world action role playing game exclusively for the PlayStation 4 System, developed by the award winning Guerrilla Games, creators of PlayStation’s venerated Killzone franchise.
Take on the role of skilled hunter Aloy as you explore a vibrant and lush world inhabited by mysterious mechanized creatures.
Embark on a compelling, emotional journey and unravel mysteries of tribal societies, ancient artifacts and advanced technologies that will determine the fate of this planet, and of life itself.
Detroit: Become Human
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Quadntic Dream bring this new neo-noir thriller based in a futuristing Detroit where Androids turn bad.
Resident Evil: Biohazard VR
Capcom’s latest offering to the Resident Evil horror franchise was the last of the first block of trailers. As some of you may know horror games aren’t my thing, so having a full length horror game in full VR is a whole lot of NOPE from me… But will be awesome for fans of such things.
VR Titles Showcase
It was no secret that coming into E3 2016 that PlayStation would be getting ready to pimp out their new PS.VR kit. This was shown in full effect with the next block of VR Titles.
Farpoint is an unnerving VR space adventure set on a hostile alien planet. On a mission to pick up scientists studying an anomaly near Jupiter, a rupture from the anomaly transports the player and scientists to an unknown alien world.
Star Wars: Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission
When Battlefront released with out a proper “X-Wing Dogfight” mode, many of us secretly hoped it was something that would be added as a VR Addon for the game – those of us that hoped that hoped correctly!
Batman: Arkham VR
Next up was a rather vague, but very exciting Batman reveal from Rocksteady. No gameplay was shown unfortunately, just a monologue from the Joker about the reasons Batman wears his mask. It certainly has myself and Lefranzine excited!
Final Fantasy VR
First of all there was a new trailer for Final Fantasy XV which looked as stunning as you’d expect from Square’s flagship franchise. However this surprisingly lead into another trailer for a VR mode included in the game. If I’m honest it seems a bit forced, but I hope to be proven wrong when I try it out in person.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Get your first look at in-depth Call of Duty®: Infinite Warfare gameplay as Reyes and his crew infiltrate and take down an enemy SetDef destroyer. Launching from the UNSA Retribution, the SCAR team must engage in intense Jackal dog-fighting and close-quarters combat through zero-g to accomplish a coordinated assault with the UNSA Tigris. Welcome to the deadly world of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
This was shown in the VR Segment, so I assume that means it is VR Compatible? Admittedly I didn’t care much for yet another CoD, but this trailer has piqued my interest!
After the VR Segment came the individual titles, some of which were very exciting!
It had been rumored for a few months, but always shot down. People hoped the Crash Bandicoot mini game in Uncharted 4 was more than just a nod to the fans. And Sony didn’t disappoint. PS4 Remakes of Crash 1, 2 and Warped were confirmed, but unfortunately not shown (it is worth watching the announcement in the press conference video though). However the trailer for Crash Bandicoot’s inclusion in Skylanders did get a trailer. Crash Bandicoot hit me right in the nostalgia!
LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The latest Star Wars film naturally gets the LEGO treatment with this cheeky little trailer for the new game out on the 28th of June (Demo already available!)
That’s right, Hideo Kojima gets his own segment! After the whole debacle with Konami and the announcement that Hideo Kojima would be working with Sony to set up his own studio, the gaming world eagerly awaited news for the eventual title that would come from the legendary game maker. What would remain from Kojima’s plans for the cancelled Silent Hills?
Death Stranding is the new title from Hideo Kojima. It was a very random but very visually stunning showing, that told us very little except that it features lots of washed up sealife and a naked Normon Reedus. While it might not have made a whole lot of sense, it definitely left us wanting to know more.
Many times over the years developers have tried to make a good Spiderman game, but many of them have unfortunately fallen short. I immediately got excited when I saw the start of this trailer, but waited to reserve judgement until it had finished. The trailer definitely looks very promising, and I REALLY hope that Insomniac can pull this one off as well as Rocksteady did with the Arkham series of Batman titles.
And they ended up with showing the live demo of Days Gone which I showed earlier, a montage of the trailers shown and a montage of titles not shown.
Each year there is a bit of debate among gamers about who “won” E3, some years it is close, some years one company makes a huge announcement that just can’t be beat. This year wasn’t like the latter, although if Nintendo had revealed the NX it could have been, so it does come down to preference. But in MY opinion, so far – with all the major showcases and press conferences already out of the way; Sony has won this year. All of the other press conferences have had their own gems dotted around for me. But Sony was solidly impressive all of the way through.
God of War, Crash Bandicoot, Spiderman, Death Stranding and Horizon: Zero Dawn all scream excitement for me, and a few of the others excite me because I know how much Lefranzine will be looking forward to them as well.
