Nintendo Announce New Partnership and Hardware Project

In a press conference today with CEO Satoru Iwata, Nintendo have announced a new partnership with Japanese Mobile Gaming firm DeNA, owners of Mobage, in a move that is believe to be the beginning of a movement that could see Nintendo bring characters such as Mario to the mobile platform.

In the same press conference it was announced that Nintendo will also be working on a new hardware, codenamed ‘NX’, although this hasn’t been confirmed to be a new console and further details are currently limited

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’,” said Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata. “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Nintendo have included the use of all exisiting IP (Interlectual Properties) as part of this deal and will work with DeNA in the creating of a “Membership System”, which will span an number of platforms and may act in a similar manner to Sony’s PlayStation Plus and Microsoft’s Xbox Gold subscriptions.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.

Its obviously far to early to start speculating what will come on this corporate alliance but we will no doubt get more bits of information in the near future.

Personally? I’ve got everything crossed for a mobile Augmented Reality version of Pokémon Snap!
