MewTwo – Have Nintendo Gone Too Far This Time?

Update: 20th November 2014

After the initial retraction of this article, it has come to light that Ninetendo indeed has no plans to release MewTwo as paid DLC. This can be seen in the terms and conditions at the base of the announcement page.

Original article as follows:

I’m sure that every single Smash Bro’s fan has heard the news, the latest reveal for Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS is MewTwo. As awesome news as this, it does pose quite a conundrum for commentators such as I. Have Nintendo gone too far this time?

Allow me to elaborate. I was watching the Nintendo announcement and it came right at the end, triumphed as a “Special Announcement”. Brilliant  was my initial thoughts as the character was slowly built and revealed. And then came the tag line:

“This special bonus fighter will be available to those of you who purchased both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U version of the game”

To say my jaw hit the floor is to slightly underplay my feelings. I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. Nintendo are providing a free download of MewTwo if you own both versions of the game. Lets look at the retail prices (based on Amazon Prices in the UK):

Super Smash Bros. 3DS – £31.85

Super Smash Bros. Wii U – £39.85

Total –  £71.70

Now correct me if I am wrong, but is that not a little bit steep for a piece of free DLC? I know there has been some outlandish DLC available for a multitude of games (*COUGH* Horse Armour *COUGH*) but have we really sunk his low? It was my understanding that the Dawn of DLC was going to bring an era of games that could be expanded and enjoyed with fresh, new content at affordable prices, giving us, the Gamers, more of what we enjoy when we want it. This to me strikes to the heart of everything that DLC stands for. For Shame Nintendo

Just for reference… (and Rage…)

  1. Most Nintendo fans also caught the tweet from Nintendo making clear that MewTwo will also be available as a normal DLC for a reasonable price, it will just be free to those of us who will be buying both versions anyway

  2. I’m still not convinced that this will be the case, I just think the dust has blown over enough that not enough people are complaining to cause Nintendo to clarify. I’ve seen articles saying they don’t have plans to add further characters, stages and such as paid DLC, but Mewtwo was already announced and they had already said it would be a paid DLC.

If you are right, it is a pretty terrible play by Nintendo!

Being a competitive game you can’t not let players have content, and can’t expect players to be required to spend that kind of money to get it if they weren’t getting one of the versions already. I think this is merely an oversight or mistranslation and do expect Mewtwo to be a regular DLC. But I could well be wrong. Nintendo are fairly new to the whole DLC thing after all…
